Pond bench to be dedicated to local man

A bench at Jamaica Pond will be dedicated to the memory of a local man, Noah Katz, in a June 20 ceremony.

Katz, who died unexpectedly last summer, was a marathoner who ran around the pond and frequented a bench on its eastern side, which became known to friends as his “office.”

JP resident Kevin Handly, a longtime park advocate, hosted an online fundraiser that garnered over $3,200 for a memorial plaque. Due to park rules, the plaque will be installed on a different bench on the pond’s western side.

Katz’s sister and brother-in-law, Cima Katz and Gary Tebor of Lawrence, Kan., will attend the memorial ceremony, which begins at 10 a.m. at the pond’s bandstand.
