JP woman achieves English Channel swim

JP resident Maura Twomey successfully swam the English Channel on July 10 as a fundraiser for a cystic fibrosis charity in Ireland.

The 59-year-old completed the grueling swim from England to France in 16 hours, 23 minutes.

She said in an email that she “enjoyed the swim and was very lucky with a sunny day and good water conditions.”

A native of Ireland, Twomey reportedly is the oldest Irish swimmer to make the channel swim.

The owner of Hyde Square’s Centre & Spring Acupuncture, Twomey swam to raise funds for the Irish charity Build4Life, which helps to build cystic fibrosis treatment facilities in hospitals. Twomey’s grand-nephew in Ireland has the disorder.

She raised nearly 24,000 euros—roughly $26,000—and is still accepting donations at mycharity.ie/event/maurasenglishchannelswim.
