Friends of Kelly Rink receives grant

The Friends of Kelly Rink was recently awarded a $2,000 grant from the U.S. Figure Skating organization to attract and inspire a new generation of figure skaters, according to a press release.

Kelly Rink, which is owned by the state Department of Conservation and Recreation, is located at 1 Marbury Terrace on the Southwest Corridor Park. The Friends of Kelly Rink is a volunteer group that helps run the rink.

The Friends of the Kelly Rink will use the grant money to increase the number of scholarships offered to community members in its “Learn to Skate” program and add 20 new pairs of rental skates.

A seven-member selection committee reviewed 28 applications for the grant money and selected six organizations. The other five organizations were Brooklyn Ice (Brooklyn, New York); Friends of Fort Dupont Ice Arena (Washington DC); Glenwood Figure Skating Club (Flossmoor, Illinois); The Ice Skating Academy (Atkinson, New Hampshire) and Rolling Meadows Park District (Rolling Meadows, Illinois).
