Man sentenced to life in prison for JP murder

Charles Reddicks of Dorchester was sentenced to life behind bars after being convicted of murdering 25-year-old Mariano Malave, according to a press release.

The murder occurred during a marijuana sale in Jamaica Plain on April 27, 2012. Witness statements, phone records, and video evidence proved that Reddicks negotiated the purchase of a large quantity of marijuana and fatally shot Malave repeatedly at a Hyde Park Avenue residence, according to the press release. Reddicks fled the scene and was arrested three weeks later.

Reddicks, 21, was convicted on Jan. 28 of second-degree murder and firearm charges in Malave’s shooting death. Suffolk Superior Court Judge Linda Giles imposed a mandatory life sentence with the possibility of parole after 15 years.

Before the sentence was imposed, Malave’s family members made impact statements describing how the murder of their loved one has affected their lives.

“I’ll never have the opportunity to talk to him again, to share stories and jokes,” Malave’s cousin told the court, according to the press release. “I’m grateful for the 25 years we had, but won’t get 25 more. We’ll never see him grow old, to have kids of his own.”
