Letter: Local elections matter

As the co-chairs of the Jamaica Plain Progressives, we urge our neighbors in JP to support Katie Forde for the Suffolk County Register of Deeds. The reasons to support Katie are both practical and political.

As a practical matter, Katie is the only candidate with the needed experience. The registry is critical to anyone buying or selling a home in Suffolk County, and it needs professional, competent management. Katie Forde is a Roslindale homeowner and a 10-year legal professional. Katie is also the only candidate in the race with hands-on experience in registries across the Commonwealth. Unlike other candidates, Katie actually drafts and records deeds.

Furthermore, Katie Forde has the most progressive platform in this race. Katie plans to improve and expand access to the registry’s services: increasing opening hours, translating important documents into more languages, and developing lawyer-assistance programs for Suffolk residents facing foreclosure.

And as a political matter, the JP Progressives truly believe that Katie Forde is the best Register of Deeds for Suffolk County. Local elections build the progressive movement for larger elections. Katie Forde is well-known among progressive activists for her years of activism on behalf of Elizabeth Warren, Ayanna Pressley, and issues such as women’s reproductive rights.

This seat has historically been perceived as a political plum for career politicians, and the candidacy of the recently unseated City Councilor Stephen Murphy suggests that he hopes to coast to this seat based on name recognition alone. Katie Forde has the best chance to defeat Stephen Murphy, and her election will continue to develop the bench of progressive candidates in this city and in the Commonwealth. This seat should be a launching pad, not a landing pad.

We urge our neighbors in Jamaica Plain to support Katie Forde for Suffolk County Register of Deeds. Vote for her on primary day, which is on a Thursday this year: Thursday, Sept. 8th.
