HSTF youths to rally for rec center

Members of the Hyde Square Task Force, a youth-oriented nonprofit, will be hosting a rally and press conference at the Jackson Square T Station on Feb. 13 at 4:30 p.m. to build support for Urban Edge’s proposed $21 million recreation center, according to a press release.

Urban Edge has raised $13 million of the $21 million needed for the proposed recreation center, which would be a two-story building with a mezzanine. The building would house an ice rink and a turf field.

According to the press release, the state has shut down two in-door ice rinks in the area—the Melnea Cass Rink in Roxbury and the Kelly Rink in Jamaica Plain—without replacing them.

“Low-income communities have fewer recreational facilities than wealthier and predominantly white communities. Where is the love for JP and Roxbury?” said Edelind Peguero, a 16-year old youth leader from the Hyde Square Task Force who has lived her whole life in Roxbury, according to the press release.
