EMILY GREENE BALCH DAY

City Councilor Matt O’Malley, pictured with Kristen Gwinn-Becker (middle) and Jamaica Plain Historical Society’s Gretchen Grozier, proclaimed Jan. 8 Emily Greene Balch Day during a Jamaica Plain Historical Society event at First Church UU in Jamaica Plain. Gwinn-Becker, who gave a speech at the event, is the author of a book about Balch, a renowned social reformer, economist, and academic. Born 150 years ago on Jan. 8 in JP, Balch in 1946 became the second American woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
