Boutique shuts down

SOUTH ST.—After being shuttered for more than a half-year, the boutique Indigena at 42 South St. finally closed for good last week. Workers cleared out the storefront and posted “for rent” signs in the windows on June 17.

The 25-year-old eclectic gift shop was taken over by Roslindale residents Vincent Bono and Seja Esancy in 2007. The shop went into a state of suspended animation last fall, with inventory sitting on shelves and stacks of mail piling up inside the front door. Bono earlier this year promised a grand re-opening in March, though that did not happen.

Bono told the Gazette this week that he and Esancy decided “that we just couldn’t afford to keep subsi-dizing the store” as the small-retail commercial economy continues to drop.
