US Senate election is Jan. 19

The special election to fill one of the state’s two US Senate seats will be held Tues., Jan. 19.

The candidates include: current state Sen. Scott Brown (Republican); current state Attorney General Martha Coakley (Democrat); and Joseph L. Kennedy (Libertarian running as an independent).

The winner will replace US Sen. Edward Kennedy, who died in office last year. Joseph L. Kennedy is no relation to the famous Kennedy political family, which has endorsed Coakley.

Paul Kirk is serving as the interim US senator in the office. He is not running for the seat.

All states have two senators in Congress. The other Massachusetts senator is John Kerry.
