HYDE SQ.—The restaurant Centre Street Sanctuary, which was located at the Blessed Sacrament Church campus at 365 Centre St., has closed, according to owner Adam Rutstein. The restaurant’s last day was March 8.
“We ran out of time and we ran out of money,” he said in a Gazette interview.
He said Sanctuary was “gaining popularity” and “gaining a lot of steam recently,” but that was not enough to offset losses incurred while building the restaurant since opening in the summer of 2013. Asked if the record-setting winter played a role in the restaurant’s demise, Rutstein responded that Sanctuary was one of the few restaurants that was able to stay open during the snowstorms and do business. But, he said, the snowstorm on Valentine’s Day “hurt us a lot,” as a jazz musician was booked to play during the day and the restaurant had a special dinner menu.
Rutstein said that the closure is “extremely disappointing,” as Sanctuary was a “family-owned and operated business.” He said he doesn’t know what the future holds for him, but that he still has the “fire in the belly” and wants to remain in the restaurant business until he retires.
