Editorial: A portrait in activism

The near-completion of Janice Rogovin’s documentary about Carlos Arredondo is good news for those who know him only as the cowboy-hat-clad hero of the Boston Marathon bombing.

Those of us who covered Arredondo’s activism in JP and elsewhere for years—and often saw Janice at work on the film—know his story is more complex and more instructive than that.

Carlos’s anti-violence activism, his advocacy for veterans, and his involvement in the Occupy movement are all noteworthy chapters as well. The same goes for his general civic engagement, as those of us who sat next to him at a candidate forum know well.

Carlos likely will be embarrassed by this attention, but we welcome the chance for others to learn about the man under that cowboy hat.
