Gazettes sold to local news group

The Jamaica Plain Gazette and the Mission Hill Gazette were sold to Independent Newspaper Group (ING) just before Thanksgiving, according to Gazette publisher and editor Sandra Storey and Stephen Quigley, president of the 10-paper weekly ING newspaper group headquartered in Revere.

The Jamaica Plain Gazette has a circulation of 16,420 newspapers biweekly, and the monthly Mission Hill Gazette prints 7,000 papers. Both newspapers publish some material in Spanish. Gazette Publications was founded in 1991 by Storey, who will continue in her role as editor and publisher on an interim basis, and plans to step down in February. No other immediate staff changes are planned.

Independent Newspaper Group publishes the 7,500-circulation Revere Journal, the 7,000 circulation East Boston Times and the 3,500 circulation Chelsea Record as well as the weekly Everett Independent, Lynn Journal, Back Bay Sun, Beacon Hill Times, North End Regional Review, Charlestown Patriot Bridge and Winthrop Sun-Transcript.

“We are thrilled to take on such wonderful neighborhood newspapers as the Jamaica Plain and Mission Hill Gazettes and look forward to working with the community to produce the best newspapers we can in the coming years,” Quigley said.

“I am pleased that the newspapers, whose doors opened 20 years ago this month, are now part of a larger but also local enterprise,” Storey said. “I look forward to working with Stephen and his team, as well as the JP and Mission Hill communities, to ensure a smooth transition.”

The sale also includes the web sites JamaicaPlainGazette.com and MissionHillGazette.com. The office location, address, telephone number and other contact information for the Gazettes remains the same.
