Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea Cabral, a Jamaica Plain resident, will join Gov. Deval Patrick’s cabinet next month as the secretary for public safety and security.
The move, announced last month, is part of an administration shake-up that also includes JP resident JudyAnn Bigby stepping down as secretary of health and human services.
Cabral, who has served as sheriff for a decade, could not be reached for comment. The sheriff, who oversees the county jail, is an elected office and Cabral has four years remaining on her term. Patrick likely will appoint someone to take the office for that period.
