JP Reads, the local literary organization, is holding its annual “flash fiction” contest. Entries are due April 6, and the winners will be published in the Gazette.
JP Reads stages an annual event series encouraging Jamaica Plain residents to all read and discuss the same book. This year’s book is “The Song of Achilles,” a novel by Madeline Miller, who will appear at a May 8 reading at the Footlight Club.
“Flash fiction” means a very short story—a maximum of 500 words. The theme of this year’s flash fiction contest is “The Reluctant Hero,” which ties into Miller’s novel and its treatment of the mythical Greek warrior Achilles.
There are two contest age categories: teen (ages 13-19) and adult (20 and up). The teen contest-winner will receive a $100 cash prize, and the adult winner will receive a $100 gift certificate to Tres Gatos, the local restaurant/bookstore. For submission information and other details, see jpreads.org.
The Gazette is a co-sponsor of the contest, along with Tres Gatos and the Writer’s Room of Boston.
