I am writing in response to Scott Hoffert’s letter to the Gazette on March 16 regarding the Young Achievers/Urban Edge proposal to expand the school and build affordable housing on the St. Andrew’s church property.
I think the plans for the St. Andrew’s site that were presented at the March 1 community meeting were exciting and unique. Although the closing of St. Andrew’s Church and school was a loss for the neighborhood, I was amazed to see how new life can be brought to this now-vacant institution.
The creative ideas the group proposed are well-planned and a move in the right direction. This property can provide support for the long-held values of the importance of public education and housing for everyone in our community. I think that following the meeting, many of my neighbors felt the same way.
