Rivera an excellent choice for BPS

I am writing to congratulate Mayor Thomas M. Menino and the members of the Superintendent Search Committee for selecting Manuel J. Rivera as the next Superintendent of the Boston Public Schools.

It’s an exciting time for our public schools. Mr. Rivera’s impressive credentials and wealth of experience make him an excellent choice to lead the city’s 57,000 students. His energy and willingness to engage parents is great news for mothers and fathers across the city. Mr. Rivera’s challenging personal story gives our young people an inspirational role model and mentor. The addition of a Latino to the Mayor’s Cabinet is another plus for Boston.

As Chair of the Boston City Council’s Education Committee, I look forward to working with Mr. Rivera to find solutions to some of the most pressing issues facing our schools today including closing the achievement gap, curbing the drop out rate, drawing families back to
the public schools, and repairing and modernizing our school buildings.

I welcome Mr. Rivera to Boston and I wish him the best of luck in his new endeavor.

John M. Tobin, Jr.
Boston City Councillor, District 6
