Feds: Man stole $250K from Navy

WOODBOURNE—A Jamaica Plain man was charged last month with stealing more than $256,000 in US Navy retire-ment money intended for his deceased father, according to the US Attorney’s Office.

Charles R. Winston Jr., 61, of 29 Catherine St. was indicted Jan. 14 on 44 counts of theft of government money. Winston faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted of the federal charges.

Prosecutors allege that when Winston’s father died in 1992, no notification was made to the government’s Office of Personnel Management, which continued making payments. Winston is charged with taking nearly 190 checks and electronic deposits between 1992 and 2007.
