Preliminary engineering plans for the redesign of the MBTA’s 39 bus route are now scheduled for January.

The MBTA and consultant McMahon Associates initially planned to present designs for the route—which runs on South and Centre Streets and S. Huntington Avenue in JP, en route to the Back Bay—in November.

“We weren’t ready,” Ralph DeNisco of McMahon Associates told the Gazette in a brief interview this week.

Community planning for the MBTA redesign, which includes widened sidewalks, new bus shelters and some stop eliminations, began in 2008. At points during the community process, MBTA planners have been criticized for hosting unpublicized meetings.

Last spring, MBTA officials told the Gazette construction work is scheduled to begin on the bus route changes in 2011.
