New police captain takes charge

Boston Police Capt. Paul Russell took over as commander of Jamaica Plain’s E-13 police district June 2, after Capt. John Greland was reassigned to another district in mid-May.

“I am looking forward to getting back into a district,” Russell said in an interview with the Gazette. “I am happy to be here.”

The switch was one of several Boston Police Department (BPD) management changes, BPD spokesperson Elaine Driscoll told the Gazette.

Greland started as E-13 commander in May 2009.

Russell told the Gazette he joined the force in 1985, and has served as a patrol officer in Roxbury. His tenure has also included stints in the citywide drug unit and as commander at Districts C-6 in East Boston and B-2 in Roxbury.

In the past year, he served as the commanding officer of the Citywide Detail Unit, which provides police details at crowded events.
