Peace Planting

(Photo by Jake Giberson) A child uses a shovel made of melted-down guns to plant a tree in the Southwest Corridor Park during the May 7 Wake Up the Earth Festival. The event was part of “Palas por Pistolas” (“Shovels for Guns”), organized by JP’s Urbano Project to memorialize young people killed by guns in JP. The project was conceived by Mexican artist Pedro Reyes and done in partnership with Spontaneous Celebrations, the state Department of Conservation and Recreation, and Rich Gargiulo Jr. of JP’s Tree Works Earth Design.
