Soldier’s Monument will be rededicated September 17

MONUMENT SQ.—The Soldier’s Monument will be rededicated on Sept. 17 in a ceremony being planned by the Jamaica Pond Association (JPA).

In another honor, last year’s cleaning of the historic Monument at Centre and South streets was named last week as a Boston Preservation Alliance Preservation Achievement Award winner.

The dramatic 1871 Monument memorializes the 23 local men killed in the Civil War. It features high arches and is topped by a statue of a soldier leaning on his rifle with his head bowed.

After years of neglect, it was restored last year by the City of Boston and contractor Daedalus, Inc.

The JPA is still working out the details of the rededication ceremony, according to JPA chair Jack Fay. The ceremony will mark the restoration of the Monument; the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War; and the 140th anniversary of the Monument’s dedication.
