First Thursday bags pedestrian award

Jamaica Plain Centre/South Main Streets (CSMS)has been given a Walkers’ Choice award from WalkBoston for its First Thursday arts nights.

WalkBoston chose CSMS and First Thursdays “because it was a great way to connect the community, make people linger [at stores] and spend time outside and meet their neighbors,” said WalkBoston spokesperson Hillary Borcheding.

“We are thrilled to be recognized by WalkBoston with this award as it highlights an important part of the mission of the First Thursday program, which is to get residents walking in the district,” said Randace Moore, CSMS executive director.

The award will be presented Dec. 1 at a celebration at UForge Gallery, 767 Centre St., during December’s First Thursday, with representatives from the Mayor’s Office, Moore said.

Popular community art event First Thursday involves several art openings held in JP businesses, encouraging community members to walk from business to business, getting to know their neighborhood and their neighbors.

WalkBoston is a nonprofit that encourages walking for transportation.
