Nonprofit warns of donation-seeking scam

Scam artists falsely claiming to represent the Elizabeth Stone House are seeking donations from victims in the Jamaica Plain area, according to a press statement from the organization.

The scam artists are approaching people on the street, knocking on doors and calling phones, the statement said. The Elizabeth Stone House, a Jackson Square-based nonprofit that offers programs for battered women, does not solicit donations by those methods, “so please do not comply,” the statement said.

Anyone approached by people claiming to be seeking donations for the Elizabeth Stone House should call the police at 911. They also can contact the nonprofit’s director of development, Jim May, at 617-409-5417.
