MONUMENT SQ.—Two years of repair work on one of Jamaica Plain’s great landmarks, the stone tower of First Church in Jamaica Plain Unitarian Universalist at 6 Eliot St., is slated to wrap up by the end of next week.
The 1853 church tower overlooking historic Monument Square has been bedecked with construction scaffolds as workers repaired the mortar and installed a new copper roof. Water seeping into the tower had been an issue, said Laurie Corkum, chair of the church’s building committee.
“The good news is the new copper roof is working well,” she said.
A grant from the Massachusetts Historical Commission helped to pay for the work, she said.
