The plan to expand and renovate the Jamaica Plain Branch Library should get full political support and proceed promptly.
The plan adds useful, welcoming space to the library, while sensibly rearranging the existing spaces. It also respects the historic building. It is a smart plan designed with good community input.
Brick-and-mortar libraries remain crucial resources for information, education and socializing. The JP Branch is one of the busiest libraries in the city and needs an upgrade badly. It has a very active friends group that surely will help to program its new spaces. The expansion already has funding earmarked in the capital budget.
The mayor and JP’s city councilors should give a thumbs-up and get this project done so the JP Branch can blossom.
