Donnell’s Bakery opens up in First Church

A new family-owned bakery specializing in cheesecake, cinnamon rolls, and cakes has opened its doors and is based out of the First Baptist Church in Jamaica Plain. Donnell’s Bakery is owned by Wendell and Nicole Donnell, who are a husband-and-wife duo. They opened their business a few months ago, and customers can request delivery through their website.

Wendell Donnell always wanted to start his own business, and learned how to do that at a class he took at Commonwealth Kitchen.

“It motivated me to put my skills to use,” Wendell Donnell said. “My mom had a bakery for 25 years, so I was raised in the kitchen. My wife Nicole watched her mom bake and as she got older found her passion in baking too.”

The team chose to rent First Baptist Church’s commercial kitchen as an affordable location to launch their new start up business.

“We absolutely love our location; we are in a great community with some great folks,” Wendell Donnell said, adding that one day when the business is bigger they plan on expanding to a brick and mortar located in Jamaica Plain.

Wendell Donnell said that their bakery is special because they are family-friendly, bake with ten ingredients or less, and bring fresh products directly to their customers. The most popular item they make is their Cinnarolls, which “some say are better than Cinnabons,” Wendell Donnell said.
