Vigil for Black Lives Matter on Sept. 5

The JP-based September Vigil in Support of Black Lives Matter will be held on Thursday, September 5, from 5:30-6:30 pm on the lawn of the First Baptist Church of Jamaica Plain, 633 Centre Street, Jamaica Plain, with guest speaker Charles Wallace-Thomas IV of Ujima. The Vigil provides a regular, monthly opportunity for community members to take a public stand against white supremacy and racist violence and for racial justice and human rights.

Charles Wallace-Thomas IV is a second-year student at Northeastern University and a Fund Associate with the Boston Ujima Project, which organizes neighbors, workers, business owners and investors to create a new, community-controlled economy in Greater Boston. Founded in 2015, the Boston Ujima Project has been recognized as the first democratically managed impact investing fund in the US.

JP Freelance Troupe Enrolling Youth for Fall Season!

Hey kids – Would you love a big moment on stage?! Come join the fun and get that chance! The Freelance Players, Inc., a musical theater company for  youth, is now enrolling for its fall season. Children from all communities are encouraged to join! Freelance has provided quality youth theater since 1974. 

 The Jamaica Plain Freelance Troupe meets on Tuesdays, 4:00-6:00pm and is for children ages 8-12 with little or no acting experience. The Troupe produces one original musical each season. The fall session starts on Tuesday, September 10th.  Initial meeting for new members/ low-key auditions are by appointment. 

Physical and vocal techniques, drama improvisation, dance, auditioning, and singing are part of the rehearsal process. Theater professionals staff the company. The programs are tuition based and some financial assistance is available. 

There are also Freelance Troupes in Newton and Dover (Mondays), Brookline and Needham (Fridays).

The Freelance Players is for older students, ages 12-16 and mounts larger scale musicals twice a year (December and May). 2020 Call for Art Proposals at Jamaica Plain Library

The Friends of the Jamaica Plain Branch Library are gearing up for a new round of submissions to select the exhibitions (it’s 4th year) for 2020 season.  These bi-monthly exhibits will be proposal-based  and selected by a committee comprised by representatives of the Central BPL, JP Branch, Friends of the JP Library, as well as standing members of the local business and arts community.  The Friends welcome artists from across New England to submit recent two-dimensional work for a solo or group show, each lasting for two-month periods. There is no specific theme, but artists are encouraged to include work that can be enjoyed by the diverse visitorship of the JP Branch Library, including children, teens, and other community members. The following art mediums will be considered for selection of five (5) solo shows and one (1) themed group show in Drawing, Mixed Media/Collage, Painting, Photography, and Printmaking.  Accepted work will be displayed in a public area of the JP Branch Library, and an accompanying reception will be organized by Uforge, our managing partner, on behalf of the Friends.

Submission is free! Digital packets must be received by 5:00 PM on Friday, October 11, 2019. Physical/in-person submissions will not be accepted. For more information about the materials required, please go to http://www.friendsjplibrary.org/gallery-proposal.
