This month, the Emerald Necklace Conservancy is excited to be planting 55 new trees along
the Jamaicaway! Nine species of trees were hand-picked by Conservancy field operations staff
to stay consistent with the historic characteristics of the Jamaicaway while also being tolerant
to road salt and other urban conditions. The plantings will include improved soil, with the
addition of gypsum to help with salt and biochar to help with water retention. The young trees
will also receive mulch, fencing, staking and watering bags. The Conservancy is grateful for the
advocacy of Senator Michael Rush, who secured funding from the Massachusetts Department
of Conservation and Recreation that allowed the Conservancy to lead this community-supported
process. Keep an eye out this month for planting crews along the parkway!
