Despite sudden summer rain, Jamaica Plain’s 2026 National Night Out on August 3 showcased the enduring bonds between local law enforcement and the community. Originally slated for Mozart Park, the celebration was swiftly relocated indoors to the Anna Cole Community Center on Lamartine Street. The weather couldn’t dampen the neighborhood’s spirit; families, civic leaders, and social service partners gathered closely with Boston Police Department District E-13 officers to share food, resources, and conversation until 9 p.m. The event was highlighted by visits from Mayor Michelle Wu and Police Commissioner Michael Cox, who joined the festivities to champion these vital grassroots partnerships.
A focal point of the evening was a special recognition of local civic leadership. The community honored Peter Ivars Elmuts, 2nd Vice-Chair of the Jamaica Pond Association (JPA) Board of Directors, for his steadfast stewardship of the neighborhood. A life-long resident who has lived in his Prince Street home for over 54 years, Elmuts transitioned from an executive career at Mass General Brigham to becoming a cornerstone of local civic governance. Applying his professional background in emergency hospital systems, he consistently collaborates with District E-13 to advocate for neighborhood safety and character.
BPD District E-13 Community Service Officer, Tasha Hibbert expressed her congratulations during the event in a heartfelt speech as follows:
“Peter Elmuts has demonstrated an exceptional and sustained commitment to improving the safety, quality of life, and civic engagement of the Jamaica Plain community through his leadership as Second Vice-Chair of the Jamaica Pond Association. As a lifelong resident of Jamaica Plain, Peter has dedicated countless hours strengthening partnerships between residents, neighborhood organizations, city agencies, and the Boston Police Department.
Peter has been a consistent supporter of community policing initiatives and neighborhood engagement efforts that bring residents and police officers together.
He understands that building relationships, encouraging open communication, and fostering trust are essential components of preventing crime and creating a safer community.
Through his leadership, Peter has helped foster an environment where residents feel comfortable sharing concerns, participating in neighborhood initiatives, and working together.
Peter devoted nearly five decades of service to Massachusetts General Hospital and Partners HealthCare, where he held numerous leadership positions and contributed to major organizational initiatives, including the expansion of one of the nation’s premier healthcare systems. His experience in emergency preparedness, committee leadership, and organizational management has translated into strong civic leadership within Jamaica Plain.
Since joining the Jamaica Pond Association Board in 2018, Peter has served in multiple leadership capacities, including his current role as Second Vice-Chair. He continues to advocate for neighborhood preservation, public safety, environmental stewardship, and collaborative community engagement. His steady leadership and ability to build consensus have earned him the respect of fellow board members, neighborhood organizations, and community partners throughout Jamaica Plain.
Peter understands that effective crime prevention begins with strong relationships between residents and law enforcement. Through his leadership with the Jamaica Pond association, he has consistently encouraged residents to report concerns, attend public safety meetings, and work collaboratively with District E-13 officers.
