Dems to skip debates, host candidate picnic

With a field of 12 mayoral candidates and 19 city councilor candidates, voters can be hard-pressed to learn information about each candidate through crowded forums. The Wards 11 and 19 Democratic Committees have decided to tackle the issue from different paths.

Ward 11 has taken a novel approach to the matter, as it will host a picnic where voters can meet the candidates. Ward 19 will let the process play out before holding a forum after the Sept. 24 preliminary has narrowed the field.

Wards 11 and 19 cover portions of Jamaica Plain. The Democratic committee for JP’s third region, Ward 10, held candidate forums in Mission Hill earlier this week.

The Ward 11 picnic, which is scheduled for Sept. 15 on Peter Parley Road, will feature barbecue and other foods, according to committee co-chair Anne Rousseau. Suggested donations are $10 per person and $25 per family. For more information, email ward11picnic@gmail.com.
