Real Estate Today: BLC delays demo of historic house

FOREST HILLS—The Boston Landmarks Commission (BLC) imposed a 90-day delay March 11 on demolishing a 115-year-old house at 57 Wachusett St., advising developer Stephen Ballas to seek neighborhood consensus on its fate.

Ballas aims to tear down the house and replace it with eight new housing units on subdivided lots. Neighbors at a March 5 meeting raised questions about the impact on history, density and affordability.

Jullianne Doherty, the Jamaica Plain coordinator from the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services, submitted a letter recommending the 90-day delay based on community response.

There is no word of follow-up meetings. Ballas is free to seek a demolition permit after 90 days.
